![]() ![]() Early in his teenage years, he began acting in Appleton’s Attic Theatre. Did you know the four-time Academy Award nominee was born in Appleton in 1955? He was William then. You might recognize Willem Dafoe from Platoon (1986), Spider-Man (2002) and The Florida Project (2017). You can eat at the Houdini’s Escape Gastropub, and each fall you can run in the Houdini 10K race. There’s a Houdini Elementary School in town. The History Museum at the Castle, just down the street, has an extensive Houdini exhibit. Houdini Plaza, the community space in the center of downtown, is named for the famed escape artist. Despite the move, Houdini considered Appleton to be his boyhood home. His family settled in Appleton in 1878, where they lived for four years until his father lost his job and they moved to Milwaukee. Houdini, or Erik Weisz, was born in Budapest in 1874. This amazes a lot of people, but there’s no trick to it. My husband had the Gastro Burger with Pub Chips half pound ground chuck, your choice of cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, and onion, served with house aioli on a croissant bun. I also had a side of the Truffle Mac & Cheese, which is to-die-for delicious a blend of cavatappi pasta, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese and truffle oil. We started off with their brandy old fashioned hand-muddled with orange, cherry and bitters, the way a good old fashioned should be! For dinner I had the Grilled Chicken Panini sliced chicken breast, gruyere cheese, spinach, tomato and basil pesto aioli. Both of us were blown away by the food, drinks and service. My husband and I decided to try Houdini’s for a date night a few weeks ago and we were so glad we did. They have also recently expanded their outdoor dining space with three fire tables to enjoy while sipping late night cocktails. The Appleton eatery is so popular with locals and visitors alike, they are in the process of building on an addition to include more dining space and a larger bar for their expansive beer selection. ![]() With 175 beers, some of the best old fashioneds around and fresh, inspired food in a laid-back atmosphere, Houdini’s is sure to please even the most diverse crowd for any occasion.
